Sept/Oct 15 Newsletter

I hope you are keeping well and have enjoyed the one day of summer we had.

Here’s a roundup of the latest IT news

Windows 10

Windows 10 has now been available for a couple of months, and I promised you my review of it in my last newsletter.

IT’S FANTASTIC!!!

In my humble opinion, it’s Microsoft’s best Operating System since the demise of the much loved and missed Windows XP. It has addressed all of the complaints that millions of users had about Windows 8. It offers many new as well as improved features that make using it a pleasure. In my experience so far, apart from a couple of minor glitches, which is only to be expected of a new OS, it has proved easy to use, stable, and best of all, FREE for the majority of current users of Windows 7 and 8. This free period will come to an end soon and then Microsoft £100 to upgrade.

Rather than me listing all the new features here, click on this link to see a short video, which demonstrates it far better than I can.

You have a choice:

  1. Do nothing, and keep with what you're currently using.
  2. You can download and install it yourself, which will take around 3-4 hours to complete, allowing around an hour and a half to download it, and then the same again to install it. Then there will be some fine tuning to be done to ensure all your current programmes and apps are installed properly.
  3. Or, I can come and do everything for you. This will take me around 2 hours ish as I already have Windows 10 on my memory stick, so there's no need to wait ages for it to download. I would then ensure all your files, documents, pictures, emails etc are working properly. Finally I'd show you how it works and how to get the most out of all the new toys and features. My charge for this will be £75 if you would like me to come and set it all up properly for you.

Please call or email me if you wish me to come and do it for you. You'll love it!!!

Save a fortune on your mobile bills

I have recently changed my mobile provider and it has saved me a small fortune. I had been an EE (Orange) customer for many years, and was paying around £60 per month for my Samsung Galaxy S4 which I’ve had for just over 2 years. I’m very happy with my phone, and I don’t need to change it for the latest model. It does everything I need it to do. So, because I was out of contract with EE having come to the end of the 24 month contract, I was free to shop around. I decided to switch to Vodafone Sim only package for the following reasons:

1.       I’ve increased my monthly data allowance (email, internet etc) from 3Gb to 6Gb which is unlimited for the first 3 months). That’s more than enough for my needs but I can always increase that to 10Gb for an extra £2 per month, if I need to.

2.       I get unlimited UK calls and texts to landline and mobiles.

3.       I keep my existing mobile phone number.

4.       1 years free subscription to Spotify, which is the most incredible music streaming service, which usually costs £10 per month (120 per year). If you're not into music, other options include 1 year free Sky Sports, or NOW TV for extra TV channels.

5.       The best bit is that my monthly costs have now gone down from £60 to £24 per month, saving £430 per year and I get a much better service for less money. I love it!

So the bottom line that if you are out of contract, you're free to switch service provider, keep your same phone number, and if you're happy to keep your handset, then you too could save a lot of money by shopping around for the best deal.

New Apple products

Last week Apple announced the launch of many new products. Virtually every product has had a serious makeover. This includes improvements to the Iphone, which is now called Iphone 6s and 6s Plus. The Ipad will soon be available with a larger screen Pro model (12” screen, up from the standard 9.4” currently), and will have optional extras such as a Smart Stylus (extra £100) and Smart Keyboard. There are also improvements to the IWatch and Apple TV products.

There are so many changes and new products, far too many for me to detail here, so if you wish to learn more go to the following websites:

A great read.

One of my most loved customers is an amazing lady called Angela Humphery, who I’ve had the pleasure of knowing, as well as her husband Martin, for about 15 years.

Angela has spent a good part of her long life, campaigning against cruelty to animals, and has travelled the world extensively. She has written an excellent book, which I can highly recommend for those interested in Animal Rights, as well as all profits going to animal welfare charity. Click on the link below to take you to the Amazon page where you can read a sample of it, as well as seeing customers’ reviews of the book. At £7.99 it’s ideal as a good read, or as a present for any animal lovers.   http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1326068911?keywords=angela%20humphery&qid=1442247180&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1

And finally….

Royal Parks Half Marathon.

You’d think at nearly 58 years old, I would know better than to run a full 13.1 mile half marathon, for the second time in 6 months. Well, I’m just a boy who can’t say no! On 11th October, I’ll be running the Royal Parks Half Marathon, hoping to raise more money for Macmillan Cancer Support, a charity very close to my heart. The run starts and finishes in Hyde Park, and takes in Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens, passing through some of our great city’s most famous landmarks. Please do not feel obliged to sponsor me, however if you would like to donate anything, big or small, to this very worthwhile cause, to support the incredible work they do, please visit my Just Giving website at https://www.justgiving.com/henmoss/  and click the Donate button at the top. Thank you.

That’s it for now. As long as I survive the marathon, I look forward to speaking to you soon.
