March/April 2011 Newsletter

I hope you are fit and well and enjoying the start of the springtime.

Here is a round up of the latest computer news.

Security Warning.

There is a major security problem that is hitting many of my customers, in the last few weeks. It is usually called Anti Virus 2011, or something similar.

It can appear on any Windows PC or laptop with a big scary warning saying SECURITY WARNING. YOUR COMPUTER HAS BEEN INFECTED.

It will then tell you to click on the Scan button to run a scan of your computer. After a few minutes it will say your computer has thousands of infections, and tell you to pay $50 to download a programme to remove it.

DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT, DO IT!!! Do I make myself clear?
By clicking on the Scan button, you are releasing this nasty malware into your computer, which will then cause tremendous damage and is a real bugger to remove.

Secondly, if you pay them $50 then you have paid for nothing of any benefit whatsoever, plus thirdly, they now have your credit card details.

If you get such a warning appear, then call me immediately and do not use the computer.

In most cases I can sort this out after having a little fight with the computer. In more severe cases I would need to bring in one of my technicians to kill the problem.

PC Tower for Sale .

I have been given 2 PCs from customers who have upgraded to new computers. I have restored them to factory settings and there are working absolutely beautifully. They are just PC towers, without a monitor, (but you can always buy a new monitor for as little as £70 upwards).   So just the tower only, no keyboard or mouse.

I have a Dell Dimension and Compaq PC which I’m selling for just £60 each including basic set up and delivery. Absolute bargain. Would be ideal as a replacement for an old slow PC or a second computer. First come, first served.

Google Transliterate

You know me, I love anything that’s free and clever, and Google Transliterate is a new service from Google, which just blows me away. It is different from their Google Translate service, which is spectacular in itself, for translating text or web pages.

What Transliterate does is convert the text AS YOU TYPE, from English to foreign, non English letters and characters, such as Hebrew, Punjabi, Chinese, Arabic and many other languages. It has to be seen to be believed. It is perfect for translating English to a different language, which can then be copied and pasted into a document or email.

You MUST try it even if you don’t speak any other languages, just to see what it does. Go to http://www.google.com/transliterate then select a language from the drop down menu on the left, and then type in the big box. Every time you press the Spacebar, it will convert the previous word by magic! Try it.

WD Passport External Hard Drive

As you know, I’m always nagging my customers to do regular backups. But I also know that 9 out of 10 people don’t do it as regularly as they should. Last month I told you about Mozy.com which allows you to back up your data online for free (up to 2Gb), and many customers are now using this happily.

However, most people now have more than 2Gb of documents, pictures, music and emails. The ideal solution is the WD Passport, which is a USB External Hard Drive, small, slim and stylish, which does a continuous automatic backup. It takes a few minutes to set up and then a short while to copy everything from your PC or laptop onto the hard drive itself. But then it will automatically add any new documents, emails, pictures etc without you doing anything. Seemples!

They can be bought through Amazon for just over £50, for the 500Gb model, but it is cheap insurance, as you never know when disaster will strike. Click below: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Passport-Essential-Midnight-Black-Portable/dp/B004445JHC/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1299930299&sr=1-1

And Finally….

Most of you will know the Billy Joel song We Didn’t Start the Fire, which chronicles life from the 1950s to today.

If you click on the link below you’ll see an incredible home made video which brings a whole new dimension to the song. I just love it.
