July Newsletter

Can you believe we are having a proper summer at last! I hope you are fit and well and enjoying this lovely weather.

Here is a round up of the latest computer news.

WARNING

As reported last month, there is a really nasty scam going around, which is on the increase and for which you need to be extra vigilant.

So many of my customers have phoned me to say they have had a call from someone in India, supposedly from Microsoft, to say that they have detected there is a security problem with their computer. They then give you instructions over the phone, to make changes to your computer.

DO NOT DO THIS. IT IS A SCAM.

Microsoft are NEVER going to call you to say there is a problem with your computer.

If you follow their instructions, you are giving them unlimited access into your computer, your files and personal information.

So if you should receive a call from “Microsoft”, all you need to do is to say two words to them. The second one is OFF!

Security Warning.

Speaking of security risks, there is still a really nasty bug going around which has the potential to kill your computer, or at least do some serious damage.

If you should get a warning notice on your screen that says SECURITY WARNING or looks like one of these images, beware, it is a dangerous scam. It looks genuine and is designed to scare you.

You will say that it has detected that there are hundreds of viruses and Trojans in your computer. There will be a button which says Remove All.

DO NOT DO THIS.

If you do, you are letting this nasty worm into your computer

It will then ask you to pay $50 to download a removal programme to get rid of it.

Again, DO NOT DO IT.

If you do, you have done 3 things; firstly let this worm into your computer, second, you have given them $50 dollars of your money for nothing, thirdly, they now have your credit card details.

You may think that you would never fall for this, but at least 6 of my usually intelligent customers, have fallen for this, and paid the money.

If you let this worm in, it is a really bugger to get rid of and will end up costing you somewhere in the region of £150 to rebuild your computer.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Microsoft Office 2010

The latest version of Microsoft Office has just been released. It has new versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.

I have had a quick look at Word 2010 and to be honest, I can’t see much immediate difference to Word 2007 apart from a few cosmetic changes to the top toolbars.

A full review and video is available by clicking HERE.

However, there are a couple of things which may be of interest to you about it.

There are 3 versions, the most popular being the Home & Student edition, which you can buy through Amazon for just under £85. This gives you 3 licences so it actually works out at less than £30 per computer, which I think is a really good deal.

That does NOT include Microsoft Outlook, which if you wanted that you could either buy a separate CD for £91, or buy the Home & Business version for £189 which includes Outlook. The top version is the Professional edition, which has all of the above, as well as Access and a few other programmes. That cost £351 from Amazon.

But if you have children or students in your home, you can get this for a fraction of the normal retail price, legally. “How can I do this”, I hear you cry.

Well, you probably don’t know about Software4Students. All School, College, University students and their family members are eligible!

You can purchase perfectly legally, the full version of Microsoft Office Professional and rather than pay the £351 from Amazon, you can but exactly the same from Software4Students for only £39.95!!!! If you don’t have a child or student, adopt or foster one!

Full details are available at http://www.software4students.co.uk/

E Cards for Business Users

My brother in law Paul Solomons is far too talented for my liking. Not only is he a very gifted artist, cartoonist, animator and musician, he’s a really nice bloke too. I hate people like that!

He has just released his new venture, Card ECards (like Hi De Hi!)

Aimed at the business market, it is an innovative new business tool, for a company to get their message across to their customers, suppliers or staff.

Rather than going into a long explanation here, it’s best for you to see for yourself how clever this site is.

Go to http://cardecards.com/promo_animation.html and take a look for yourself.

He also has a range of free Egreetings cards for birthdays; anniversaries etc. Have a look at http://www.daftoons.com/ Far too much talent. Hate him!

And finally...

A little puzzle for you instead of the usual 3D picture.

Tom, Dick and Harry are 3 friends who share a house together. They decide to buy a new radio for the house, so pop down to their local shop.

They see a perfect radio and buy it for £30, so they pay £10 each.

However, the shopkeeper, who is a very honest chap, realises after they have left the shop that he has overcharged them by £5, the radio should only have been £25.

He sees their friend Fred walking past his shop, so he calls him in and explains what’s happened. Fred says, no problem, give me the £5 and I’ll give it back to them.

But Fred is a bit nasty, and decides to only give the boys £1 back each, and he keeps the other £2 for himself.

So the boys have each paid £9 each.

3 X £9 is £27, plus the £2 that Fred kept for himself, comes to a total of £29.

WHERE IS THE OTHER £1 GONE????????

1st correct answer wins £10million and an island in the Caribbean .

That’s it for this month. Remember I’m always here if you need any help or advice.
