Feb – March 2012 Newsletter

I hope you are fit and well and keeping warm.

Here’s a roundup of the latest news from the computer world.

Virus Warning.

Of particular concern is a new breed of virus which has recently been discovered, which comes in via email, without an attachment, and can infect your computer or laptop simply by opening it. It comes in as an email with the title Banking Security Update. Just looking at this is enough to trigger the virus.

Full details of this nasty virus can be found by clicking on the link below.

The best advice is to NOT open an email from any bank. Your bank or building society will NEVER email you asking you to log into your account.

Make sure your anti virus software is up to date and that you run a regular full virus scan, once a week if possible.

My preferred choice is Microsoft Security Essentials, which is very good FREE solution, or for better and full protection NOD32.

If you have any questions please call or email me.

BT Broadband customers.

If anybody ever asks me who do I recommend as a broadband provider, I will only ever recommend BT. With any provider, two things you have to take into account: Firstly does it work well, and secondly, when it doesn’t and there is a problem, how good is their customer support. In my humble opinion, nobody beats BT.

Now BT are rolling out their Infinity broadband service. IT IS FANTASTIC! It gives really high speed broadband, with speeds of up to 30-40 Mb (compared to the average of 5-10Mb for typical broadband).

This is great for people who use streaming video, such as BBC IPlayer, YouTube or gamers. It does cost a few pounds more each month, but you should find out how much you are currently paying for your current broadband service.

Also you can test your average download speed by going to www.speedtest.net

Virgin cable customers are also enjoying high speed broadband which they say will soon be up to 100Mb. A bit of a difference to the speeds of about 5 years ago where the only broadband speed available was ½ Mb maximum.

Netflix

Do you know about Netflix yet?

It is a fantastic new service which allows you to watch a huge selection of movies and TV series, commercial free, on your computer (PC or Mac), or your games console connected to your TV, or your smartphone (Not Blackberry)

For a small charge of £5.99 pm you can watch an unlimited amount of films and TV shows, whenever you want. Of course this is subject to having a fast Internet connection otherwise you will find it pausing and buffering which is really annoying. Another reason why you may consider getting a faster broadband service if this service is of interest to you.

Netfix are offering a month’s free trial, so try it and see if you like it. Go to www.netfix.com and follow the simple sign up instructions. Any problems, please call me.

Winter Tune up and service

Like any car, every computer does need to be serviced at least once a year, to keep it running to its best ability. I come across so many computers which have slowed down or are just not as good as they used to be. For a fixed fee, I can come and service your computer, make sure you have the right security protection, back up your valuable files and data, and get it running again to its former glory.

Within an hour you will find a tremendous improvement and have the peace of mind knowing that your computer is clean and protected and everything is safely backed up.

Cloud Computing.

I will soon be able to offer a brand new service, which should be of interest to every single person who owns a computer. Cloud technology is simply a means of making sure that all your valuable documents, emails, pictures and everything else stored on your computer, is continually backed up securely, and accessible from anywhere in the world. Regular readers of my newsletters will know that I am constantly nagging you to make sure your computer is backed up in case of disaster. I reckon that less that 10% actually do it.

I am currently in discussions with a couple of Cloud providers, and I should be able to give you more details shortly.

And finally…..

For fans of the Iphone, take a look at this video, which combines Iphone technology with amazing magic. I love it. Click on the link below to watch and be amazed.
