Newsletter March ‘14

I hope you are keeping fit and well.

Here’s a roundup of the latest IT news.

Cloud Backup Service

I wrote to you a few months ago regarding the Secure Data Cloud backup service I am offering. Many of my customers have taken this up and are enjoying the peace of mind of knowing all of their emails, documents, pictures, music etc are safely backed up automatically, and accessible from anywhere in the world.

In case you missed it first time, here are the highlights of the service again.

·         Automatic continuous backup of ALL your data (emails, documents, pictures etc). Once it has been set up, there is NOTHING ELSE you need to do, it all happens automatically.

·         If anything was to happen to your computer (either it dies or is stolen) all your valuable files are easily restored into another computer.

·         Unlimited storage. Unlike many similar services which charge varying monthly amounts depending upon your usage, Secure Data allows UNLIMITED space for a single monthly cost, starting at just over £5 per month.

·         You can back up all the computers in your home or office.

·         Peace of mind knowing everything on your computer is backed up automatically, so you never have to worry about having to do it manually.

·         Your data is accessible from any PC, Mac, Tablet or Smartphone instantly.

I strongly recommend this service to all my customers. Don’t procrastinate, just do it. Please call me to arrange this to be set up quickly for you.

BT Infinity (or other High Speed Broadband options)

These days, virtually everyone has broadband in their house. The average download speed is around 5MB and 0.4 Upload speed. Most people pay £15-£20 per month for this service.

However, the cost of high speed fibre broadband had come down dramatically recently, and I would strongly recommend that if you don’t yet have it, you really should.

BT Infinity customers average 30-40Mb download speed (some can achieve nearly 80Mb) and around 15Mb upload speed. This makes a huge difference when downloading files, music, video etc.

However, if you are looking to have the SecureData backup service (or any other Cloud service) then you’ll find it can take days (or even weeks) to upload all your data onto the cloud if you are using standard broadband. But with Infinity or Fibre broadband, that time is dramatically improved.

I switched last year to BT Infinity, and not only do I get a dramatically faster service, but I actually saved £5 per month on what I was previously paying.

BT are offering currently Infinity packages starting at £15pm, (and half that £7.50 for the first 6 months), which is probably less than you are currently paying for standard broadband.

The other benefit of having this service is that you usually get an unlimited monthly usage allowance, rather than a limited download allowance, which some people find they sometimes exceed, if you have a busy month online.

So if you are a BT Broadband, Sky Broadband, Virgin, TalkTalk, EE or John Lewis Broadband customer, you should ask about switching to a much better, more efficient, and probably cheaper service than you are currently getting.

Yahoo Woes Continue

For the last year, the problems with Yahoo Mail have continued to plague millions of its users, and the bad news is that it STILL has NOT been resolved.

Every week, I receive at least one or two emails from Yahoo email users, which they have no knowledge of being sent out, with no covering message, just a link to a dodgy website, which when clicked on, could infect your computer.

Why has this still not be fixed? Yahoo is not alone. Some Gmail, Hotmail and AOL email users have exactly the same problem. But Yahoo is by far the biggest victim of being hacked.

So what can you do?

You have 3 choices:

1.      Do nothing and hope you are not one of those affected.

2.      Change your email password and security info regularly (eg mother’s maiden name)

3.      BEST OPTION is to change from Yahoo to a different provider and inform your contacts of your new email address.

If you are looking to do this, you may wish to consider buying your own domain name (mine is henry@henrymoss.co.uk) which doesn’t cost a fortune, and is far less likely to be the victim of being hacked into. Of course I could help you do this and organise the change of email address and inform all your contacts.

New Apple Ipad Air.

I have just played with the new Ipad Air for the first time OMG!!!! It is fantastic!! It’s much slimmer and lighter than its predecessor and is easy and a pleasure to use.

I was with friends who have an old BT Hub2 and standard broadband (NOT Infinity high speed), and the speed of the Ipad Air is just astounding. It’s by far the fastest tablet I’ve ever used. The speed of opening web pages is just amazing. So much faster than previous models.

Prices range from £360 -£480 but if you are looking for the best tablet on the market, and it is within your budget, then I can strongly recommend it.

Of course I’d be happy to set it all up and show you how to get the best from it.

And finally…..

I’m fully convinced that there are people walking this Earth who were not necessarily born here!

I believe that the magician David Blane is one of them.

I am just mesmerised by his tricks and illusions, and the funny thing is, I don’t even want to know how he does them, I just love the spectacle and the whole trick.

If you have time, I would urge you to go onto youtube.com and just search for David Blane and you’ll just be amazed.

Here’s a typical example of an OMG moment.  Enjoy

That’s it for this month.

Hope to speak with you soon.
