June 2012 Newsletter

I hope you are keeping well, and enjoying this non-summer

Here’s a quick round up of the latest news.

Scam Alert

I’ve told you about this before but many of my customers are still being hit by bogus callers. You may get a phone call from someone who says they are from Microsoft or Windows or BT, to say that they have detected that your computer is infected with viruses and Trojans, and they will have to close your computer down unless you do certain checks. They then tell you to perform actions on your computer, and then go to a website which will run a scan. The scan will always show that you have millions of viruses and nasties. They then say you have to pay to download a programme to get rid of these viruses. They sound convincing, but that’s their job.

DO NOT DO THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!!

If you do, which some of my customers have done (no names mentioned) then you have done 3 things. First, you have given them unlimited access into your computer where they can see everything you do, and make changes or delete files etc. Second, you have paid them usually over £100, and third, they now have your credit card details.

It’s very simple. If you ever get a phone call saying that they have detected there is a problem with your computer there’s only two words you need to say to them, and the second word is ‘OFF!’ Never allow anyone you don’t know to get you to make changes to your computer. You think you would never fall for a scam like that, but so many people do. DON’T BE THE NEXT VICTIM.

Hotmail Alert

Again, I’ve told you about this problem before, but it is still happening to Hotmail, and some Yahoo and Gmail users.

Hackers are able to access some Hotmail email accounts and send out an email in your name to all your contacts, with a link to various websites, which are usually pornography or virus websites. Your friends get an email from you, and they click on the link as they think it’s from you and therefore safe. They end up getting their computer compromised and attacked. It’s really nasty.

In one extreme case, one of my customers found her Yahoo account had not only been used to send out bogus emails to all of their contacts, but then they wiped everything from all her inbox, sent, and address book folders. Total nightmare.

So what’s the answer? The best solution would be not to use Hotmail and delete your account. If that’s not an option, then you should change your password and security question (e.g. mother’s maiden name) on a regular basis.

For not a fortune, less than £30, you could have your own domain name, such as you@yourname.co.uk as mine is henry@henrymoss.co.uk

I could certainly help you do this, which makes your email safe and look more professional. Let me know if you need any further advice on this.

IPads

More and more of my customers are buying IPads and loving them. When they first came out a couple of years ago, I couldn’t see who would be buying them. Now after using them, I can’t see that anyone who can afford one wouldn’t have one. They are sooo brilliant. If you don’t yet have one, let me tell you the main benefits. They are fantastic for fast Internet & Email access. They are great for viewing photos and TV and movies in HD quality. You can store your entire music collection on it, as well as books, newspapers and magazines. Kids love the thousands of games that are available to play. But the main benefit is the almost 1 million Apps that are available to download, some are free, some are paid for. You can still buy an Ipad 2 for under £300, but if your budget allows, I would always go for the latest Ipad 3, which starts from under £400 going to £560 for the top of the range model.

I can’t speak highly enough about them, and I am Mr Ipad, so if you need any advice or tuition on how to get the most out of it, please call or email me.

Roboform.

Do you have problems remembering different passwords for different websites? Then have you seen Roboform? It is a fantastic programme which allows you to store your website passwords as well as your personal information. The free version allows you up to 10 passwords (if you need more than 10, then the Pro version is a one off cost for unlimited passwords). It also lets you save as much personal information such as name, address etc, when filling in online forms on the internet. It saves so much time and hassle. I’ve been using it for years and I can highly recommend it for all PC, Mac and IPhone and Ipad users. The paid for version also automatically synchronises all your passwords on all your devices. Soo clever.
